Despite Apple's late entry into the world of artificial intelligence with its Apple Intelligence platform, expectations were that the company would compensate for this delay by offering diverse and innovative features capable of being game-changers.
However, so far, reality seems to have fallen short of those ambitions, according to a report published by PhoneArena.
With the launch of iOS 18, Apple introduced a set of AI tools that many considered mere Apple-style copies of features already available from competitors, such as smart writing tools, photo editing, visual recognition, and even Siri, which was supposed to undergo a major leap forward in 2025 before being postponed.
According to new leaks published by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, iOS 27 may continue the same approach, focusing on improvements that seem more about catching up with competitors than introducing new innovations.
Among the most anticipated features is a new Siri app with a sequential conversation interface similar to GPT, Cloud, and Gemini chat apps, and the ability to use AI agents from third-party apps via the App Store.
Visual Intelligence is also expected to be integrated directly into the camera app, functioning similarly to Google Lens, with capabilities such as reading nutritional information from labels or creating contacts from photos.
Reports also indicate an expansion of AI-powered photo editing tools, including automatic image reframing and resizing, features already available on many modern Android phones.
Google prepares for early attack
Meanwhile, Google is gearing up for its Google I/O conference on May 19, with artificial intelligence expected to be the central focus.
The company is likely to unveil significant updates to its Gemini platform and proactive AI agents within Android, potentially giving it a significant advantage months before Apple's WWDC conference.
Observers note that the difference between the two companies is becoming increasingly apparent: Google is attempting to shape the future of AI-powered software, while Apple appears to be still trying to catch up with current technologies.
Apple delayed a feature for some users
Despite the criticism, this delay may have a silver lining for some Apple users who don't want artificial intelligence integrated into every part of the system.
One of the most significant advantages of Apple Intelligence currently is that it can be easily disabled entirely, unlike some other systems that impose AI tools more extensively within the system and applications.
Is John Ternos changing direction?
These developments come amid growing speculation about the future of Apple's leadership, with some suggesting that iOS 27 could be the last major release under Tim Cook's management.
All eyes are on John Ternos, considered a leading candidate to succeed Cook, especially given the increasing need to revitalize software innovation within the company.
While Ternos is known for his hardware expertise, many believe that Apple's future will depend not only on its hardware but also on its ability to redefine the iOS experience and artificial intelligence in the coming years.
Apple is currently facing one of the most critical periods in its recent history, as superior design and hardware alone are no longer sufficient, and AI capabilities have become a key competitive factor among major tech companies.
