OpenAI's declaration of a "high alert" status for its ChatGPT chatbot was not a fleeting decision or a preemptive move, but rather the result of mounting competitive pressure that had taken its toll on the company.
According to Dede Das, a former Google employee, on the X platform, ChatGPT's user traffic has declined by nearly 6% since Google launched its new Gemini 3 platform. These figures are based on a report from SimilarWeb, which revealed that average daily traffic dropped from 203 million to just 191 million visits, as reported by Mashable and reviewed by Mobi alo.
If these statistics are accurate, this means that OpenAI lost approximately 12 million daily users in just one week. While some of this decline may be related to the Thanksgiving holiday period in the US, the scale of the change remains significant.
Google recently launched Gemini 3, which it described as its most powerful and intelligent offering to date. Tests on the LMArena platform indicate its superiority over competing models, most notably ChatGPT, posing a direct challenge to OpenAI.
This coincided with reports that CEO Sam Altman had declared an internal alert in response to increasing competition. A leaked memo revealed the urgent need to address models like Google's Gemini 3 and Anthropic's Cloud.
The problems didn't begin with the release of Gemini 3. GPT-5 faced criticism upon its launch due to its cold, conversational style compared to previous versions, which later led the company to reinstate GPT-4 despite GPT-5's superior technical capabilities. OpenAI's attempts to balance performance with security standards have clearly fallen short.
While OpenAI managed to maintain its lead in the interactive AI robot market for a time, Google's launch of the Gemini 3 model in late November shifted the competitive landscape, especially given Google's key advantage: a massive amount of training data that gives its models continuous evolutionary power.

The competition isn't limited to Google. Anthropic announced it had over 300,000 commercial customers as of September 2025, including Fortune 500 companies, further intensifying the race for dominance in the world of artificial intelligence.
