Galaxy S26 or iPhone 17 ? The Android vs. iOS rivalry heats up in 2026

In 2026, the gap between entry-level flagship phones will be significantly smaller than before. This year, the comparison is essentially between the Galaxy S26 at $899 and the iPhone 17 at $799.

Almost the same size, in the same price range, but with completely different philosophies.

The question is no longer: Which has better specs? It's: Which one best suits your everyday usage?

Price and availability

Apple's iPhone starts at $799 for 256GB, with no lower storage options.

In contrast, the Galaxy S26 comes at $899 for the same capacity, a $40 increase over the previous generation, amid global memory shortages.

That's a $100 difference right out of the box, giving Apple's phone a clear value advantage on paper—but the specs only tell part of the story, according to a report by Digital Trends reviewed by Mobi Alo.

Design: Very similar with different touches

When holding the two phones, the striking similarity in dimensions is hard to ignore.

The height is almost identical, and the difference in width is practically negligible.

The Samsung phone is thinner (7.2 mm) and lighter (167 grams), compared to the Apple phone's 7.95 mm and 177 grams.

Both devices have aluminum frames, but with different edge designs: Samsung's is sharper, while Apple's features more traditional rounded corners.

For protection, the Galaxy S26 uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2, while Apple's uses Ceramic Shield 2 on the front.

Both phones have an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

Screen: Brightness decides the match

Both screens are 6.3 inches, but the details differ:

The iPhone 17 has a resolution of 2622 x 1206 pixels with a pixel density of 460 pixels per inch.

The S26 has a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels with a pixel density of 411 pixels per inch.

The difference is noticeable in a direct comparison, especially in sharpness.

As for brightness, the Apple phone reaches 3000 nits, compared to 2600 nits for the Samsung, giving it a clear advantage in direct sunlight.

Both devices support an adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz and an Always-On Display feature.

Performance: Different numbers… a similar experience

The Galaxy S26 is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and 12GB of RAM, while the iPhone 17 uses an A19 chip with 8GB of RAM.

On paper, Samsung seems to have the edge in terms of memory and multitasking.

However, in real-world use, both phones deliver excellent and smooth performance with everyday apps and demanding games.

The practical difference becomes apparent when opening a large number of apps in the background; Samsung's larger RAM provides more space without frequent reloading.

System and artificial intelligence

The S26 runs One UI 8.5 on top of Android 16, with Galaxy AI features like smart reply suggestions, spam call filtering, and an Audio Eraser tool within messaging apps.

In contrast, the iPhone 17 comes with iOS 26, featuring a "Liquid Glass" design, along with Apple Intelligence features for real-time translation and smart tasks.

Samsung promises seven years of updates, while Apple typically offers five to six years of software support.

Cameras: Different tastes and mutual optical superiority

Galaxy S26:

  1. - 50 MP main camera.
  2. - 12 MP ultra-wide camera.
  3. - 10 MP 3x optical zoom.

iPhone 17:

  1. - 48MP main camera with an f/1.6 aperture.
  2. - 48MP ultrawide camera.
  3. - 2x optical zoom via a sensor cutout (without a physical lens).

Samsung tends to produce more vibrant, print-ready colors, while Apple maintains a more natural look.

In low light, the iPhone 17 retains a slight advantage thanks to its image processing and wider aperture.

However, in zoom, Samsung clearly outperforms it thanks to its 3x optical lens.

The S26 also supports 8K video recording, while the iPhone is limited to 4K, with a noticeable advantage in video stabilization and color processing.

Battery and charging

The S26 has a larger 4300mAh battery, compared to the iPhone 17's 3692mAh.

However, the advertised playback figures are similar (31 hours of video playback for Samsung versus 30 hours for Apple).

In terms of charging, the iPhone 17 has a slight edge with 40W wired charging and 25W MagSafe charging, while the S26 supports 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging.

Which is better?

Choose the Galaxy S26 if you prefer Android, need more memory for multitasking, rely on optical zoom, or want the highest level of customization.

Choose the iPhone 17 if you're looking for better value, a brighter screen, faster charging, consistent long-term performance, or if you're part of the Apple ecosystem.

This year's competition is closer than ever.

The final decision won't be based on the spec sheet, but on your daily usage patterns—whether you prefer the freedom of Android or the integration of the Apple ecosystem.
