Both the M5 Pro and M5 Max utilize Apple’s all-new Fusion Architecture, which combines two third-generation 3-nanometer chips in a sophisticated package. The chips feature a new 18-core CPU shared by both the M5 Pro and M5 Max, a scalable GPU, a media engine, a unified memory controller, a neural engine, and Thunderbolt 5 technology.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max share an 18-core CPU, comprising six super cores and 12 all-new performance cores—despite the new name, these are essentially the same as the old performance/efficiency cores.

It's worth noting that both the Pro and Max processors share the same CPU core configuration. The M4 Pro processor differs from the M4 Max processor. The Pro has 14 cores in total, including 10 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, while the Max has 16 cores, including 6 performance cores and 10 efficiency cores.

Returning to the M5 Pro and Max processors, Apple indicates that the new Supercore is industry-leading and will deliver the fastest single-threaded performance thanks to increased bandwidth, a new cache architecture, and improvements in branch prediction.

The new performance cores have been optimized for improved power efficiency and multi-threaded performance for professional workloads. Apple claims that the new CPU improves performance by up to 40%.

Let's move on to graphics. The M5 Pro comes with a 20-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine, while the M5 Max can be configured with a 32-core or 40-core GPU.

Each graphics core contains a Neural Engine and higher unified memory bandwidth. Apple says the new GPU improves AI peak computing by four times compared to the M4 Pro and M4 Max. Meanwhile, the new M5 Pro/Max GPU improves ray tracing by 35%.

The 16-core Neural Engine is also faster thanks to the higher memory bandwidth.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max GPUs are available for pre-order starting tomorrow, March 4, inside the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.
