Snapdragon Wear Elite arrives with on-device AI capabilities, performance and battery gains

Qualcomm’s latest system on a chip for wrist wearables is here and it jumps on the Elite naming scheme with more power and on-device AI capabilities

Qualcomm’s latest integrated processor for wrist-worn wearables is now available. Part of the Elite series, it boasts enhanced power and integrated AI capabilities, keeping pace with the evolving world of artificial intelligence.

Snapdragon Wear Elite arrives with on-device AI

This processor will power the next generation of flagship Wear OS smartwatches, as well as AI-enabled wearables like pins and necklaces, with added support for Android and Linux.

In terms of performance, Qualcomm claims the Wear Elite processor delivers up to five times faster CPU performance, up to seven times faster GPU performance, and 30% longer battery life compared to the previous Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2 platform.

The Wear Elite processor is built on a 3nm process and features a penta-core CPU with a 2.1GHz main core and four 1.9GHz performance cores, along with a dedicated coprocessor.

This is Qualcomm’s first Wear OS platform with a custom Hexagon NPU, specifically designed for AI assistants, boasting performance of up to 12 terabytes per second and supporting models with 2 billion coefficients.

For connectivity, Qualcomm offers support for RedCap 5G to reduce latency and extend battery life. The chip also supports NB-NTN (Narrowband Non-Terrestrial Networks) in areas without cellular coverage, as well as Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, UWB, and dual-band GNSS.

While Qualcomm offers all the aforementioned connectivity standards in the Snapdragon Wear Elite, device manufacturers can obtain versions of the system-on-a-chip (SoC) with some features removed.

The system also supports fast charging; Qualcomm claims that devices equipped with this new system can charge to 50% in under 10 minutes.

The first Snapdragon Wear Elite devices are expected to launch in the "coming months," with OEMs such as Samsung, Google and Motorola already joining the list of companies offering Snapdragon Wear Elite devices.
