Google has unveiled an expanded security plan extending to 2026, focusing on making Android 17 one of the most secure operating systems against digital fraud, cyberattacks, and data theft.

The new updates rely on artificial intelligence technologies and real-time threat detection, along with more sophisticated privacy tools that give users unprecedented control over their personal data.

Documented bank calls to prevent fraud

One of the most notable new features is the verified financial call system, which targets one of the most dangerous forms of digital fraud known as bank impersonation.

The system verifies incoming calls in conjunction with banking applications such as Revolut and Nubank, blocking any unverified call before it reaches the user, according to a report published by Android Headlines and reviewed by Mobi Alo.

It is estimated that this type of fraud causes global losses of approximately $950 million annually, making this new feature a significant step in combating digital financial crimes.

Artificial intelligence to detect malicious applications

Android 17 introduces an enhanced “Live Threat Detection” system, which uses on-device artificial intelligence to monitor app behavior after installation.

The system can detect suspicious activities such as:

  1. - Sending text messages without permission.
  2. - Hiding app icons to run in the background.
  3. - Running hidden processes without user notification.

Additionally, a new layer of protection within the Chrome browser scans APK files during download and issues immediate warnings when potential malware is detected.

Stronger protection against phone theft

Google is also facing a rise in phone theft, where the primary target has become data rather than the device itself.

Therefore, the company has added a new layer of protection that makes a stolen phone less useful to criminals by:

  • - Enabling biometric locking for the “Mark as Lost” feature.
  • - Preventing the disabling of tracking without fingerprint or facial recognition.
  • - Enabling anti-theft protection by default on new devices.

The “Theft Detection Lock” feature also relies on motion sensors to detect attempts to snatch the phone and lock it immediately.

More precise control over privacy

On the privacy front, the system offers more flexible options, most notably temporary permissions, allowing users to share their location only once while using the app.

Google has also added a new contact selection system that allows sharing a single contact instead of granting the app full access to the contact list.

Checking the operating system

To combat unofficial modified versions of Android, Google will launch an "Android OS verification" feature that allows users to verify that their device is running an official and certified version of the operating system.

The feature will initially roll out on Pixel devices with an encryption-based verification system that ensures the security of the system and applications and prevents fake versions from hiding any malware.

Long-term security

Google is also developing additional technologies, including hiding one-time verification (OTP) codes from suspicious applications, along with introducing post-quantum encryption technologies to counter future cybersecurity threats.

With these steps, it appears that Android 17 is not only improving security but also fundamentally redesigning itself to become a smarter system, better equipped to thwart attacks before they occur.
