Google has released a major update to its popular browser, Google Chrome, version 143, after an unexpected one-week delay from its previously scheduled release date of November 25. This update combines significant security improvements with new artificial intelligence features that greatly enhance the user experience.
Fixing 13 security vulnerabilities, with a focus on four high-risk vulnerabilities
The Chrome 143.0.7499.40/41 update for Windows and Linux includes fixes for 13 security vulnerabilities discovered by external researchers, none of which have been exploited in actual attacks to date. Among the most notable vulnerabilities is a type confusion issue in the JavaScript V8 engine, classified as a high-severity vulnerability (CVE-2025-13630).
This release follows an emergency update Google released last November (Chrome 142) to patch another critical vulnerability (CVE-2025-13223).
AI support with Google Gemini integration within the browser
The most notable feature of Chrome 143 is the integration of Google's Gemini artificial intelligence technology directly into the browser. Users can now easily access AI features directly from the address bar or the new tab page.
Gemini's features include summarizing text, explaining concepts, and answering questions, making browsing smarter and more seamless.
Smart automatic reading feature
The update also added an automatic reading mode that can be activated by right-clicking on the text, which opens the text in a sidebar with options to play audio, control reading speed, and audio type, enhancing accessibility and helping to better consume content.
Scope of update and current support
Currently, the Gemini features in Chrome 143 are only available to Windows and Mac users in the United States, with the requirement of using English as the default language, while Google plans to gradually expand support to include other languages and regions.
The challenge for other Chromium browsers
The Chrome 143 update puts pressure on developers of other Chromium-based browsers like Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi to catch up with the new security level. Opera, however, remains behind and is still using Chromium version 140, despite the inclusion of some important security patches.
How do I update Google Chrome to the latest version?
Users can easily manually update their Chrome browser by going to the Help menu > About Google Chrome, where the update will be automatically searched for and installed.
